Chemical Tests for
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids Lab
This is an instructional lab that leads students through the procedures of identifying monosaccharides, starch, lipids, and proteins with a set of chemical tests. The tests used include Benedict's reagent, iodine, and Biuret. Students will conduct these tests on distilled water as a control, then compare with a series of standard substances, like vegetable oil and starch.
Essential concepts: Macromolecules, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, starch, proteins, amino acids, lipids, Benedict's solution, Biuret, iodine.
