Applying the Scientific Method to Debunk Dowsing Rods

The best way to learn the scientific method is to actually apply it in a hands-on way. This lab allows students to test an unusual claim -- that copper dowsing rods can be used to locate water, missing objects, or deposits or metal underground. Most scientists identify dowsing rods as another example of pseudoscience, and this lab helps guide students in constructing a blinded experiment where they test the claimed properties of dowsing rods themselves.

You will need to obtain a set of dowsing rods for each student. These can be bought many places online -- find the least espensive ones you can. Choose three objects the students can try to "locate" under styrofoam cups using the dowsing rods. I used a small beaker of water, keys to lab drawers, and some pieces of magnetite. Have students within groups rotate so that each member gets to try the rods. Combine all data into a class set and look at the percent success rates. Results will vary, but you should end up around 50%.
